atlantic city area info If you enjoy the glitz and excitement of the blackjack or craps tables, there is no need to wrestle with the crowds of Las Vegas. Atlantic City, New Jersey is convenient, happening, and offers a game for everyone. The city is easily accessible, with direct flights from many major airports. From practically any point on the east coast, Atlantic City is a short, scenic drive away. Without a doubt, if you love to gamble, Atlantic City should be your next destination.

While it doesn't have quite as many casinos as Las Vegas, many consider this to be one of the finer points of Atlantic City. The city doesn't overwhelm you with quantity, but instead opts to focus on quality. All the major casinos are represented, from Harrah's to Sands to the famous Trump trio, and everyone - from high rollers to masters of the nickel slots - will be satisfied. All of the casinos offer glittering, exciting gambling floors, any game you can imagine (and then some), and plenty of non-gambling entertainment.

Atlantic City casinos are concentrated along the famous boardwalk, together with numerous fabulous restaurants, galleries, and shops. The boardwalk, originally built in 1870 to reduce the amount of sand being tracked into shops from the beach, is now the major artery of Atlantic City. For window-shopping, for getting from one sparkling casino to the next, or for just relaxing and people watching, the boardwalk is the place to be.

atlantic city information If you've had your fill of poker and blackjack, Atlantic City offers plenty of other attractions within a small area. The Steel Pier, once the venue of some of the world's most popular bands and performing artists, is now an extensive amusement park, offering all sorts of rides for the whole family. The Convention Center, even if it is not hosting a show or sports tournament, is still worth a visit for the impressive architecture and the massive pipe organ, the largest of its kind in the world. And don't forget the extensive beaches of this waterfront town.

In the casinos and at the card tables of Atlantic City, chance is the name of the game. With a little skill and a little luck, you might walk away with a pocketful of cash. One thing that Atlantic City doesn't leave to chance, though, is your entertainment. Winning is possible, but fun is guaranteed.

A little history about Atlantic City

In spite of its glamorous history, Atlantic City has had its fair share of hard times. The city, which boomed for decades and became the favorite vacation spot for millions, suffered a severe downturn during the 1960's and 70's. While the city is convenient to the entire country by car or air, many visitors opted to take advantage of affordable travel to other vacation spots such as Florida. To counter this and maintain the reputation that Atlantic City had gained as "America's Favorite Playground," city planners adopted an aggressive strategy of enticing investors, businesses, and jobs to the area.

Their strategy worked beautifully, and the city has been on an upward trajectory of popularity for nearly two decades. In fact, 2003 saw the opening of the impressive Borgata. Adding over 2,000 rooms to the many thousands already available, the Borgata primed Atlantic City for a continued spurt of growth and economic development. In fact, Atlantic City is booming in all areas, with jobs, real estate, and tourism leading the way.

Atlantic City is an ideal place to live

The Atlantic City region provides a perfect setting to live and work. Housing options are varied, from exciting downtown apartments to pleasant farmland communities that remain convenient to all that the city offers. There is also plenty of great open spaces, with biking, hiking, and running trails throughout the area. Of course, boating and fishing opportunities here are as good as it gets.

Area schools are nationally recognized

The area schools are recognized nationally for their quality, with several area schools named National Blue Ribbon Schools. Also in the area are two colleges: the Richard Stockton College, and Atlantic Cape Community College. These provide great resources for students of all ages, and offer both day and evening classes to fit into any busy schedule.

As you can see, it is an exciting time in Atlantic City. While it continues to uphold its reputation as the leader in entertainment and recreation, the city is now proving itself a great place to live and work. More and more visitors are realizing that it makes good sense to turn their visit into an extended stay - and they are making to leap from tourist to local.

atlantic cityDuring your visit to Atlantic City, don't allow yourself to get stuck in the gravity of the boardwalk. Although there is admittedly much to see and do along the main strip of casinos and shops, there are a few out-of-the-way attractions that you really shouldn't miss.

Atlantic City has the odd distinction of being home to the largest wooden elephant in the world. Lucy the Elephant has been an attraction for locals and visitors alike since 1881. She towers above her domain, standing over six stories high, and weighing in at a respectable 90 tons. Listed as a National Historic Landmark, Lucy has served as a hotel, a tavern, a brothel, and finally, a museum and treasured landmark. When you go to visit her, don't forget your bathing suit - she looks down on one of the best beaches in the area.

Another unusual animal attraction has become an Atlantic City legend. The Steel Pier, Atlantic City's most famous ocean pier, was the setting for great entertainment throughout the history of the city. Big name acts, like Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Ed Sullivan regularly graced the pier. But outshining them all was the world-famous diving horse. Four times a day or more, the brave steed and equally brave bareback rider took a 40-foot plunge into a tank of water, to the delight of all. To this day, visitors to the Steel Pier ask if the diving horse is still performing. It isn't - the last dive was in 1974, on the 53rd reunion of the original act.

atlantic city boardwalkFor those interested in things even more bizarre than a high-diving horse, Atlantic City has the Ripley's Believe It or Not museum, dedicated to the bizarre, the shocking, and the generally weird. The museum features regularly changing exhibits of things that... well, you'll just have to see them to believe them!

While you are driving or walking to Ripley's museum, you may feel a strange sense of deja vu. No, it isn't lack of sleep from partaking in all of Atlantic City's great nightlife. If the street names somehow ring a bell, even if you've never been here, it is because the board game Monopoly is based on Atlantic City streets. The game, created by Charles Darrow in 1929, remains the most popular board game in the world.

Be sure not to miss Atlantic City's off the beaten path attractions. While the well-known highlights of the city: the boardwalk, the casinos, and the Steel Pier are all great fun, you'll bring home some fantastic stories if you search out a few of Atlantic Cities oddities.
